The Vata, which has a special tendency to move downwards is called Apanavata.
Location:
According to Charaka, Apanavata is located in the following: two testes (Vrshana), urinary bladder (Vasti), penis (Medhra), umbilicus (Nabhi), thighs (Uru), groin (Vankshana), rectum (Gudam) and the lower part of the intestine (Antra).
Functions:
Apana facilitates the excretion of faeces and urine. It is responsible for the ejection of the semen, the menstrual flow and to bear down the foetus at the time of delivery.
